Earwigs

Dealing with earwigs in your Boise-area home or garden? Our local experts share proven strategies to eliminate these moisture-loving pests and keep them out for good.

Why Earwigs Love the Treasure Valley

If you've ever lifted a flowerpot or moved some mulch in your Meridian or Eagle garden and found those distinctive pincher bugs scurrying away, you're not alone. Earwigs thrive in our Treasure Valley climate, especially during our irrigation-heavy summers when moisture is abundant.

These reddish-brown insects with their signature rear pincers (called cerci) aren't actually dangerous to humans, despite their intimidating appearance. However, they can damage seedlings, flowers, and vegetables in your garden, and nobody wants to find them crawling around inside their Boise or Nampa home.

Earwigs become particularly problematic in Idaho during late spring through early fall. Our warm days and cool, irrigated evenings create the perfect environment for them to flourish. They're nocturnal, so you'll typically notice them at dusk or discover evidence of their feeding on plants in the morning.

Understanding What Attracts Earwigs to Your Property

Before you can effectively eliminate earwigs, you need to understand what's drawing them to your Caldwell or Star home in the first place. Earwigs are moisture seekers, and our Treasure Valley irrigation systems, sprinklers, and garden watering schedules create ideal habitats.

They hide during the day in damp, dark places like under mulch, landscape timbers, stones, boards, and dense ground cover. Overgrown shrubs touching your home's foundation, thick layers of organic mulch, and piles of leaves or grass clippings are like five-star hotels for earwigs.

Inside your home, they're typically found in basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens—anywhere with higher humidity levels. They often enter through gaps around doors, windows, utility pipes, and foundation cracks.

Outdoor Prevention and Control Strategies

The best defense against earwigs in your Kuna or Middleton home starts outside. Remove their preferred hiding spots by clearing debris, excess mulch, and leaf piles from around your foundation. Keep mulch layers to 2 inches or less and maintain a 6-12 inch dry barrier between mulch and your home's foundation.

Adjust your sprinkler system to avoid overwatering and creating persistently damp areas. Water in the morning rather than evening so surfaces can dry during the day. Trim shrubs and vegetation away from your home's exterior to improve air circulation and reduce moisture.

For active infestations in your garden, try these proven methods:

Create rolled newspaper traps by moistening newspaper sections, rolling them up, and placing them in garden beds at dusk. Earwigs will crawl inside overnight. In the morning, dispose of the rolled newspapers in a sealed plastic bag.

Use shallow containers filled with a half-inch of vegetable oil or soy sauce placed around affected garden areas. Earwigs are attracted to the scent and will fall in and drown.

Diatomaceous earth (food-grade) sprinkled around plant bases creates a barrier that damages earwigs' exoskeletons. Reapply after rain or irrigation, which is frequent in our Treasure Valley summers.

Indoor Prevention and Elimination

Keeping earwigs out of your Boise-area home requires sealing entry points. Inspect and repair weatherstripping around doors and windows. Seal cracks in your foundation with caulk, and install door sweeps on exterior doors, especially those leading to garages or basements.

Check utility entry points where pipes, wires, and cables enter your home and seal gaps with appropriate materials. Don't forget about window wells—these are common entry points in many Treasure Valley homes and should be kept clean and dry.

Reduce indoor moisture by using dehumidifiers in basements and crawl spaces, fixing leaky faucets and pipes, and ensuring proper ventilation in bathrooms and laundry rooms. Remove any damp cardboard boxes or paper products where earwigs might harbor.

If you find earwigs inside, vacuuming them up is an immediate, chemical-free solution. Empty the vacuum bag or canister into a sealed plastic bag and dispose of it outside promptly.

When Professional Help Makes Sense

Sometimes earwig problems in Nampa, Eagle, or other Treasure Valley communities require professional intervention. If you're seeing large numbers of earwigs consistently despite your prevention efforts, if they're getting into multiple rooms of your home, or if you're dealing with them year after year, it's time to consider professional pest control.

Professional treatments typically involve targeted exterior barrier applications that create a protective zone around your home's foundation and entry points. These treatments are especially effective because they address the source of the problem—the outdoor population trying to get inside.
